The first technical meeting of Simpyc establishes the project’s research programme
DIARIO DEL
PUERTO, 18/01/2005
Yesterday morning the first technical meeting of the Simpyc project (Life) (A system of port-city environmental indicators) was held in the Edificio del Reloj of the Valencia Port Authority. This first meeting of technical representatives from the ports and cities taking part in the project determined the agenda for carrying out Task 1 of Simpyc, as well as the scope of this first action.
The project, led by the Valencia Port Authority has established that Task 1 will be carried out by the month of October when partners will meet again to hear and share the conclusions of these preliminary studies.
The principal aim of yesterday’s meeting was to establish the grounding for carrying out environmental diagnoses in the Ports of Livorno, Toulon, and Valencia, and pilot projects in Denia, Villajoyosa and in the citiies of Livorno, Toulon and Valencia.
Other subjects of lesser importance were also discussed at yesterday’s session.
An agreement was also reached regarding the contents of the web page of the project as well as a possible project logo.
Analysis
It should be pointed out that the Schedule for Task 1 establishes that after the summer partners will meet to give an account of the progress made and then in October the conclusions will be finalised.
After this, Task 2 will begin with a quantitative analysis of air emissions, a noise map will be drafted and observations will be made on the visual impact of the ports.
As readers of the Diario del Puerto will already know, the aim of the environmental diagnosis of the ports and cities taking part in the project is to identify all the environmental, socioeconomic and organisational factors which intervene in port-city relations before carrying out the study and determining corrective measures for possible problems in order to improve the relationship between port and exclusively urban areas.
As a result, this environmental diagnostic study becomes the preliminary assessment of port-city relations which will lay the foundations for carrying out the next tasks of the project.
