International Workshop: SIMPYC Project

The relationship between ports and cities and the communities within them has born fruits ever since their creation and allowed society to develop at a constant pace. As a result, the nature of ports has often defined the course of city development and in turn, ports have mirrored urban economic dynamism.

At the same time, cities and their ports have joint obligations and concerns in relation to well-being in the port-city environment due to sharing the same physical space. It was in this framework that the SIMPYC Project (A System for Environmental Integration in Cities and Ports) was launched in August 2004 with the participation of the local authorities and ports of Livorno, Toulon and Valencia as well as other institutions and companies committed to environmental protection in the same field: the Regional Department of Infrastructure and Transport of the Generalitat Valenciana, the University of Valencia, Azahar Ingeniería, Fundación Comunidad Valenciana Región Europea and Puertos del Estado.. The project, co-financed by the Life Programme of the European Commission and due to run for 42 months until 30th January 2008, has already produced numerous development tools as a result of this joint environmental protection strategy along the port-city interface. .

The time has now come to share the findings of the project and re-launch the debate on port-city relations in terms of the environment. In order to do this, an International Workshop on the SIMPYC Project has been organised in collaboration with Puertos del Estado (a project partner) and will be held in Valencia on 22nd November. Project partners and other interested parties will present their findings at this event and discuss other complementary topics to provide a global view of environmental initiatives in the field of port-city relations.

The results of the MADAMA project on Risk Management for Dangerous Goods Transport in the Mediterranean Area will be presented on 23rd November. This project is financed by the European Commission within the Interreg IIIB Medocc Programme and will run for 18 months until March 2008 with the principal aim of defining and harmonising all actions concerning control and protection in the dangerous goods transport chain. The aim of MADAMA is to help improve both safety and risk management in the Mediterranean area by using ICT (Information &Communication Technologies) solutions for sustainable mobility and improved environmental protection.

In Europe and in particular the Mediterranean Area, a considerable volume of dangerous goods is transported by road, increasing the risk of accident and damage to the environment. The MADAMA Project makes a detailed analysis of the opportunities and limitations of using alternative modes of transport for transporting dangerous goods by rail and/or waterborne transport.

In view of the above, it is our pleasure to invite you to attend this International Workshop which we trust you will find of interest. Please find attached the proposed agenda as well as the information required in order to confirm your attendance and complete the administrative procedure. .

We look forward to welcoming you to Valencia.
