3ª Technical and Management Meeting of the Simpyc Project LIFE 04 ENV/ES/000216
On 14 and 15 December ,the “3rd Technical and Management Meeting” was held in Toulon of the project financed by the LIFE Programme for Port and City Environmental Integration (SIMPYC), led by the Valencia Port Authority with the participation of the Local Authorities and Ports of Livorno (Italy), Toulon (Francia) and Valencia, as well as the Regional Department of Infrastructure, and Transport, Organismo Público Puertos del Estado (Public Agency State Ports), the University of Valencia, the Fundación Europea: Comunidad Valencia and Azahar Ingeniería.
Mr Federico Torres (Project Manager) represented the Valencia Port Authority along with Mr Rafael Company, Ms Alicia Marti and Mr Pablo Palomo in representation of the FEPORTS Foundation which is performing the role of project secretary.
This 3rd Technical and Management Meeting of the SIMPYC project got underway with a welcome address from Monsieur Philippe SANS, Deputy Mayor of TOULON and Monsieur Michel GERODEZ, Regional Minister of the Communauté d’Agglomération TOULON PROVENCE MEDITERRANEE.
A press conference was also held at the start of the meeting where the representative for each partner spoke of the importance of the project results, including the identification of the main problems arising from port-city interaction and proposals for improvement.
The meeting was held over two days with a discussion of the 7 tasks of the SIMPYC Project. The completed work in relation to task 1,where a diagnosis was made of each of the ports and municipalities taking part in the project, was presented on the first day. These diagnoses have provided a cornerstone for subsequent actions in the SIMPYC project. The methodology and current progress of task 2on the design of action plans in commercial ports were also discussed at this first workshop. This task contemplates the design of a system for monitoring and controlling noise pollution, the design of a system for monitoring and controlling air pollution and a visual impact study of the port-city interface.
At the start of the second day, the Regional Minister for Infrastructure and Transport spoke about the work involved in task 4on the implementation of an Eco-management system in recreational ports of the Valencia Community, particularly in Denia and Villajoyosa. Other topics covered on the second day with the aim of gaining a consensus from the partners included new initiatives to be carried out in task 3, the design of a system of indicators to allow environmental actions in task 5to be assessed, social involvement and awareness programmes with the aim of informing port users and the general public of the socioeconomic importance of ports and the authorities’ concern for carrying out activities which are environmentally friendly. The dissemination initiatives which fall within the framework of the task 6 were also mentioned as well as issues relating to financial management as in task 7.
The meeting concluded with a visit to the Port of Toulon where environmental activities and actions were explained in detail among other issues.
