20/07/07 Design of an Environmental Indicator System
As part of the task to Design and Implement Monitoring Plans in commercial ports, an Environmental Indicator System has been designed to allow environmental aspects which cause an interaction on the port-city interface to be monitored.
The first phase involved selecting the environmental variables to be considered based on the conclusions reached in the environmental diagnoses of the beginning of the project and environmental aspects on the port-city interface. A list was drawn up which provided a starting point for the System of Environmental Indicators. In relation to design, existing Indicator Systems in the Ports of Livorno and Valencia were taken into account in order to improve existing systems. A total of 10 indicators were established for the three aspects of the project (air, noise and visual impact) as well as social perception. The system was designed following the same criteria in order to simplify comparing the results in the study areas.
Based on the above actions, information flows were determined as well as the parameters considered by the indicators in each case, how and when these parameters are measured, by whom, and to whom the information should be sent.
With the design of the Indicator System, work is continuing on the development of an Integrated Balanced Scorecard which will incorporate the Indicator System into organisational structure.
